My brother works with water companies.

He was shown a graph of water usage in Vancouver and they overlayed the gold medal hockey game times on top.
I think Vancouver and probably the whole country used very little water during each period of the hockey game. As soon as the intermission started water usage skyrocketed to near record demand for the rest of the break. Usage plummeted abruptly once the game started again.
So apparently it was more then just our breath we were holding during the game.

It's funnier cause it's true!

The display tank measures L 24 X W 12 X H 20
The sump is a 14 gallon glass tank.

How many drain/return holes should I have? Just one each?
How big should the holes be?
Should I try to drill them myself or get them done at a glass shop?

Has anyone had their tank drilled by a glass shop in the Moncton area that they would recommend?

Hi everybody, my name is Kim and I am new to keeping a marine aquarium. I've been keeping fresh water tanks for about 2 years now and I finally gave into the temptation to purchase my first marine tank a few days ago. I don't know much about it all yet, but I have some basic knowledge, good advice, and a great book to get me going.

I am currently nose deep in "The Conscientious Marine Aquarist" by Robert M. Fenner and I think it is a great beginners book.

So my odessy into salt water fish has begun. I am a university student at Dalhousie and that is partially my reason for jumping into thise area of the hobby so rashly. I kept walking by the marine tank in the biology department and I fell in love with their two clown fish. That lead me to toying with the idea of getting a tank... then I ended up spending some student loan money on one. A wise decision? Probably not. A fulfilling decision? Most definitely. At least I am not out drinking my money away like other students lol!

So about my little slice of the ocean. It is a simple 55 gallon tank, two 36 inch T5 bulbs, a fluval 304 filter, three powerheads, and a heater. Not the most impressive setup, but suitable for my future clown fish. I hope to add a little skimmer to it eventually, but I've been told at this point in the game it is not strictly needed so I will continue to save my pennies for now. It is just a toss up, a new powerhead or a skimmer first lol!

Currently I am on day 4 of my cycle and I am still waiting to get some readings of ammonia or nitrite. I was hoping for at least a bit of ammonia to show by now, but I will keep waiting.

So... a picture of the tank:

I'm trying to figure out what an appropriate height would be for my lights.
Right now i have 2 Glo T5 lights. A double bulb and a single bulb strip. the Double bulb has two 18,000k H.O. lights and the single bulb strip has a Blue Acintic light. I run them on two seperate timers so the blue comes on, then the day bulbs. after 8 hours the day one turns off, then after 12 hours the blue turns off.

The both came with hanging kits and i have them suspended roughly 6" over the edge of the tank. Right now i have two different Button polyp frags, one came attached to the live rock when i got it, the other i cultured my self and seem to be doing fine.i'm wondering is there an optimal height, since i do plan to add Pulsing xenia, condy anemone and other corals, maybe some LPS and stoney as i get used to the new set up, or is there a good set height that will benefit all the corals.
